About The Position

The Polysomnographic Technician is responsible for performing comprehensive Polysomnographic testing and analysis, and associated interventions under the general oversight of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the medical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee. A Polysomnographic Technician can provide oversight of a Polysomnographic Trainee. This is a technical position functioning independently with limited supervision. Work situations require extensive knowledge and the application of advanced expertise in the field of sleep disorders, and sound clinical judgments, actions, and decision making regarding unusual patient behavior, i.e. seizure activity, life threatening cardiac and respiratory abnormalities. Internal contacts are basically within the work group but may include patient care staff and management throughout the Medical Center. This position has external contacts with physicians as well as extensive direct patient care and patient contact on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • Boarded by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with emphasis in polysomnography or a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration.
  • Successful completion of an American Academy of Sleep Medicine A-STEP accredited educational program leading to a certificate in polysomnography.
  • Minimum six months work experience as a Polysomnographic Trainee.
  • Minimum one (1) year polysomnographic technology experience (preferred).
  • CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive Polysomnographic testing and analysis.
  • Provide associated interventions under the oversight of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or medical director.
  • Oversee Polysomnographic Trainees.
  • Apply extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of sleep disorders.
  • Make sound clinical judgments regarding unusual patient behavior.
  • Document proficiency in core competencies including arrival preparation, electrode/sensor application, capnography, monitoring, and PAP titration.
