About The Position

The Radiology Holding Nurse (RHU) Nurse provides specialized care for patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional procedures. This role involves comprehensive pre-procedural assessment, intra-procedural coordination, and post-procedural recovery. The RHU Nurse ensures patient safety, manages sedation recovery, and serves as the clinical liaison between the patient and the Radiology team.

Requirements

  • Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred), Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Advanced IV insertion skills, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and familiarity with sedation protocols.
  • 1-2 years of critical care (ICU/ED or PACU) experience is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-Procedural Preparation
  • Medical Screening: Verify patient identity, procedure type, and NPO (nothing by mouth) status.
  • Informed Consent: Ensure all surgical and sedation consents are signed and understood.
  • Clinical Readiness: Review lab results (specifically BUN/Creatinine for contrast safety and PT/INR for IR procedures) and alert the Provider to abnormalities.
  • Vascular Access: Initiate IV therapy and manage existing central lines (PICCs, Ports) for contrast administration.
  • Post-Procedural Recovery (Phase I & II Recovery)
  • Hemodynamic Monitoring: Perform frequent vital sign checks and neurovascular assessments following invasive procedures.
  • Access Site Management: Monitor arterial or venous sheath sites for hematoma, bleeding, or distal pulse changes.
  • Sedation Recovery: Monitor patients recovering from General Anesthesia, Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC), and Moderate Sedation using the Aldrete scoring system.
  • Specialized Technical Tasks
  • Contrast Safety: Recognize and treat immediate allergic reactions to iodine or gadolinium (e.g., hives, anaphylaxis).
  • Emergency Response: Maintain proficiency in ACLS/BLS to manage rare but critical events like contrast-induced cardiac arrest or respiratory depression.
