The Staff Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families in the Emergency Department (ED). He or she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. The RN demonstrates leadership when providing and improving patient care. The incumbent reports directly to the Nurse Manager of ED. The RN serves as a role model when functioning as team leader or charge nurse under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee. The ED is staffed and equipped to provide initial evaluation, treatment, and disposition for a broad spectrum of illnesses, injuries and psychiatric disorders, regardless of the level of severity. Emergency care is provided in a clearly defined area dedicated to this function and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ED RN responsibilities include but are not limited to: performing triage assessments on the patients and classifying them using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), a five-level ED triage algorithm that provides clinically relevant stratification of patients into five groups from 1 (most urgent) to 5 (least urgent) on the basis of acuity and resource needs. The ED RN then executes evidence-based nursing practice actions to care for the patient based on the determined acuity level. In this capacity, the ED RN is also responsible for conducting a focused assessment based on the patient's condition, reporting abnormal findings to the ED providers, implementing nursing protocol/providers' orders, and evaluating the patient's response to all treatments and interventions. In addition, the ED RN initiates interdisciplinary referrals for patients who require specialized services such as social work, mental health, and diabetes education and wound care. The ED RN plays a pivotal role as the patient advocate on the interdisciplinary team collaborating with all other team members to assure optimal, timely and above all, safe care for the patient. The Staff RN is also responsible and accountable for maintaining training required and may be assigned additional duties as area needs require. The Staff RN is expected to communicate timely and effectively with all members of the patient care team, as well as relate courteously and appropriately to all internal and external customers. The Staff RN must be able to push-pull and lift 35 pounds and must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Finally, the Staff RN is expected to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and demonstrate consistent effective communication skills and exemplary professional behaviors. Fostering positive interdisciplinary collaborative relationships is essential for continuity of care that is safe and quality driven.
