About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) will assist in delivering comprehensive medical and nursing services in support of the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Mendota. In this role, the RN contributes to the daily clinical operations of the facility's Health Services Unit by performing patient assessments, administering medications and treatments, monitoring chronic and acute conditions, and responding to urgent or emergent medical needs within the institution.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
  • Graduate of an Accredited Nursing School/Program.
  • Current, active, and unrestricted license to practice nursing in California.
  • Certification in BLS for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care services in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional standards through the evaluation of patients and therapeutic treatment as ordered by Health Services clinical staff.
  • Perform nursing duties within the scope of the current licensure.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, i.e., by mouth, intradermally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly.
  • Assist with the distribution of medications at the pill line.
  • Monitor and evaluate the response to therapy.
  • Perform skin testing.
  • Perform venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining laboratory specimens.
  • Maintain accurate logs for all reports in accordance with the Bureau of Prisons and AAAHC Policy.
  • Screen laboratory tests/results for normal/abnormal laboratory values and notify the physician or physicians.
  • Ensure all sharps are secured, accounted for, stored, and disposed of according to institutional and national policy.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ability and skill to operate EKG and laboratory equipment.
  • Clinically manage injuries by splinting and immobilizing.
  • Attend to medical emergencies.
  • Work collaboratively with staff physician(s) and consulting physician(s) in planning institute, evaluation, and revising program plans.
  • Assist in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to the delivery of the health care services.
  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems.
  • Manages the daily operations of the clinic and conducts daily sick call, which may include securing health histories from the patient, recording findings, and providing clinical evaluations.
  • Provides a wide range of emergency services in the absence of the physician.
  • Perform duties as required but accept only those nursing assignments that are commensurate with his/her educational preparation, training, experience, and licensure laws.
