About The Position

Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking a (temporary) Registered Nurse for our San Francisco and Walnut Creek Health Centers. This role is part-time, onsite, 16 hours per week. The Registered Nurse will function as part of health center department staff providing direct patient-centered care in surgical abortion clinic under the clinical supervision of the Nurse Manager and in accordance with PPFA and PPNorCal Medical Standards and Guidelines and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge/experience with EHR & EPM systems. Knowledge of spreadsheet software and word processing software preferred.
  • Current California RN license.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certificate.
  • Reliable automobile transportation and a valid CA Driver's License and insurance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to PPNorCal Medical Standards and Guidelines while providing patient-centered care.
  • Work as an integral member of the outpatient clinical team utilizing detailed communication to ensure clinic and department flow is optimal.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, a sense of responsibility and a high level of motivation.
  • Work efficiently in a busy environment, often under pressure, without compromising accuracy, attention to detail, and courtesy to patients and staff.
  • Document in electronic health records accurately and thoroughly.
  • Maintain professional manner and patient confidentiality.
  • Dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives and administer injections of hormonal contraceptives approved by the Federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in strict adherence to PPNorCal RN standardized procedures, PPNorCal MS&Gs, and US Medical Eligibility Criteria.
  • Refill medications per order of an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician.
  • Educate patients on sexually transmitted illnesses and reproductive/urinary tract infections signs, symptoms, etiology and treatment.
  • Educate patients on the female reproductive cycle and all contraceptive method options.
  • Consult with Advanced Practice Clinicians and the on-call physician appropriately.
  • Manage medical emergencies.
  • Support and actively participate in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives of PPNorCal.
  • Perform transvaginal and abdominal ultrasounds if appropriately trained and privileged
  • Review medical history, drug allergies, current medications, and labs of patients to address any special considerations and ensure no contraindications to surgical abortion procedure.
  • Consult with abortion providers regarding special considerations or contraindications to surgical abortion procedure as needed.
  • Complete patient intake for procedural abortion and family planning services as needed.
  • Perform transvaginal and/or abdominal ultrasounds
  • Perform in-house labs such as hemoglobin, RH factor, rapid HIV tests and pregnancy tests.
  • Collect blood, urine, pharyngeal and rectal samples for testing and order labs as instructed by an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician.
  • Complete sedation screening on all patients who elect moderate sedation; screening includes but is not limited to review of vital signs, BMI, oxygen saturation, ASA classification, risk of obstructive sleep apnea, physical exam of head and neck, and auscultation of heart and lungs.
  • Initiate peripheral intravenous lines and withdraw blood as needed.
  • Elicit and answer questions regarding the surgical abortion procedure, risks, and aftercare.
  • Elicit and answer questions regarding return of menstruation and birth control use/side effects.
  • Inform patients of next steps and expectations in their surgical abortion appointment.
  • Review and sign informed consent forms for surgical abortion with patients before administering cervical preparation medication.
  • Assist the abortion provider throughout the surgical abortion including room set-up, rooming of patient, monitoring of patient vital signs, comforting the patient, and responding to emergencies.
  • Receive patients in the recovery room and assist in transferring patient from the procedure room to the recovery room as needed.
  • Create a warm, comforting environment in the recovery room.
  • Supervise patients in the recovery room including but not limited to taking vital signs, assessing pain level, evaluating bleeding, educating, and using clinical judgement to escalate concerns to the abortion provider.
  • Provide education to patients regarding all medications to be administered, including their desired effects, side effects and risks.
  • Administer medications per Advanced Practice Clinician or physician order.
  • Discharge patients from the health center per abortion provider order.
