About The Position

The Registered Nurse at Tennessee Oncology plays a crucial role in providing safe, quality care to cancer patients throughout their treatment journey. This position involves coordinating direct patient care, collaborating with healthcare providers, and ensuring that patients receive the necessary support and education to manage their diagnoses effectively. The nurse will also be responsible for administering chemotherapy and other treatments, monitoring patient progress, and maintaining accurate medical records.

Requirements

  • Current TN or compact state RN license.
  • Minimum one-year RN experience, may be waived with Executive Director approval.
  • Current ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy card required within 6 months of hire.
  • Oncology certification strongly recommended within 2 years of hire.
  • Experience in an outpatient facility preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of oncology practices and treatments.
  • Knowledge of current developments in cancer diagnosis and therapy.
  • Experience with phases I, II, and III clinical trials.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and performs direct patient care, collaborating with other care providers and team members.
  • Reviews, updates, and verifies all patient required data prior to and during each visit.
  • Collaborates with physician/provider to assess and treat symptoms related to disease and treatment.
  • Performs telephone triage utilizing critical assessment skills to evaluate patient concerns.
  • Starts peripheral IVs and manages central venous access devices.
  • Mixes and administers chemotherapy and other drugs according to standards after training.
  • Documents administration of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and research study drugs as applicable.
  • Follows policies related to drug cabinet use, including verification and documentation.
  • Monitors PT/INR results and manages anticoagulation therapy with the provider.
  • Assists with provider-performed procedures such as biopsies.
  • Conducts patient education and documents patient readiness to learn.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for patient assistance and insurance.
  • Screens patients for needs and provides counseling and referrals.
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Completes required inventory counts and informs management of clinic needs.
  • Supervises LPNs, CNAs, and MAs, and manages inventory and supplies.
  • Generates and reviews daily clinical reports for accuracy.
  • Participates in committees and focus groups as requested.
