About The Position

The Orlando VA Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse (Surgical Specialty Unit) who collaborates effectively and provides leadership, education, and clinical direction to promote safe, efficient patient care for Veterans within the Orlando VAHCS. This position is located at Lake Baldwin OPC. The Surgical Specialty Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in the unit/program level quality improvement process and initiatives as well as customer service programs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States.

  • At least 2 years recent experience in surgery specialty clinics preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
  • Rooming patients to facilitate clinic throughput, obtaining vital signs.
  • Administers medications, assist with office procedures to include sterile field setup.
  • Provides pre and post in-clinic or surgical procedure education and information about medications.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
  • Oversees the safety of the patient, ensures correct labeling of specimens, cleans and stocks exam rooms, properly handles all reusable medical equipment.
  • Recognizes subtle changes in the patient's condition and responds timely, choosing the correct interventions.
  • Uses the Automated Medicine Dispensing System and/or the Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy and accurately documents in the Electronic Health Record the patient findings, assessments, and care provided.
  • Uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems that result in improved patient outcomes.
