The Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (2A) at Northwestern Medicine is a 26-bed unit dedicated to providing treatment, care, and service to adult patients with acute medical, surgical, and cardiac conditions, with a specialization in complicated surgeries. The patient population includes, but is not limited to, individuals undergoing esophagectomies, whipples, surgical-oncology cases, high-volume liposuction, multi-level spinal fusions, and vascular cases. This unit also caters to surgical patients who require medication drips not suitable for a standard medical-surgical inpatient unit, and it is open to medical step-down and overflow patients to enhance overall hospital throughput. Direct patient care on the 2A unit is delivered by registered nurses, maintaining an ideal ratio of 1:3-4 patients for step-down level of care. The Staff Nurse Inpatient role involves prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care for acutely ill patients through the comprehensive nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. This role requires effective interaction with patients, their significant others, and other health team members, all while adhering to ANA standards of professional nursing practice, the organization’s Code of Ethics, and Corporate Compliance Program, as well as all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory/accreditation standards.
