About The Position

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) works in partnership with local communities to support people with developmental disabilities in living, learning, and working in their communities. APD provides critical services and support for customers with developmental disabilities to reach their full potential. The Agency serves people with spina bifida, autism, Down syndrome, children ages 3-5 at high risk of developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome, Phelan-McDermid syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. This is a Registered Nurse Specialist position which is responsible for the supervision and coordination of all nursing services in their assigned area. Perform supervisory duties of communicating with, motivating,training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees’ work.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Must be willing to work beyond the normal work schedule to maintain minimum coverage levels and meet the needs of the Agency.
  • Must maintain certification in Prevention and Safety Strategies, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Direct Care In-Service.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Registered Nurse license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to do repetitive movements with arms, hands, neck and head.
  • Must have normal vision and hearing, including use of corrective devices.
  • Must be able to ambulate up and down a stairwell
  • Must be able to bend, twist, turn, kneel, stoop, squat, push, pull, lift and walk extended distances.
  • Must be able to physically operate all equipment necessary to do job tasks.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for one hour without a break
  • Must be able to remain alert while on duty
  • Must be able to work 16 hour shifts as needed
  • Knowledge of Nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Human anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrates skills in the use of emergency equipment within the scope of training.
  • Demonstrates skills in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrates skills in communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide emergency nursing care to include but not limited to basic life support, emergency care for choking (abdominal thrust), rescue breathing and use emergency equipment.
  • Ability to read, teach and implement residents’ support plans, formal and informal programs/interventions.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to operate software programs to include Word and the Internet.
  • Ability to assess residents’ skills and needs.
  • Ability to keep records on residents’ progress.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to nursing operations.
  • Ability to assist with evacuation of residents during an emergency.
  • Ability to demonstrate competency, as appropriate, in all areas of training, some of which requires physical activity such as CPR and PASS
  • Ability to assist in lifting and transferring residents weighing more than 100 pounds, as needed

Responsibilities

  • Administration of treatments, medications, and other care which requires the expertise of a professional Registered Nurse. Confers closely with physicians. Participates in crisis intervention. Maintains adequate documentation in residential log daily, as needed in progress notes, daily report and any other required documentation. Observes and documents physical and behavioral responses to medications.
  • Provides oversight to other Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and paraprofessional staff in providing nursing related functions. Maintains and documents Certified Nursing Assistants competency as it relates to nursing delegated functions. Communicate with staff regarding progress and changes in operating procedures, including holding formal staff meetings at least monthly. Management of resident transportation. Maintains and documents Support Staff’s competency as it relates to nursing delegated functions.
  • Conduct an initial assessment and provide appropriate treatment as soon as possible after being notified or becoming aware of an injury or possible injury. Complete Section II of the DDC Incident Report Form in accordance with IM process.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
