About The Position

This is work providing professional nursing services to patients under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, licensed osteopathic physician, licensed podiatrist, or a licensed dentist. The incumbent is expected to perform professional nursing duties for residents who require mental health care; coordinate and facilitate psychiatry clinic services; serve as a professional liaison between the attending psychiatrist and facility staff; provide leadership in the mental health continuing education program for staff; and participate in the delivery of general nursing care as assigned. This position requires lifting, pulling and squatting. Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: The Work You Will Do Performs professional PMH nursing assessments on newly admitted residents; quarterly assessments on residents with specified psychiatric diagnoses; assessments on residents with medication changes; bi-annual assessments on all residents receiving psychotherapeutic medications; annual assessments on residents with specified psychiatric diagnoses; and assessments on residents in crisis and/or experiencing significant behavioral change. Participates in Active Treatment meetings for residents with significant mental health issues and/or unstable psychiatric diagnoses. Maintains psychotherapeutic medication history profile in each resident’s medical chart; presents psychotherapeutic medication variance data with analysis and recommendations at quarterly Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee meetings; and serves on facility-wide committees that have identified need for mental health nursing and/or psychiatry input. Prepares charts; collects data from interdisciplinary team members; conducts clinical assessments with psychiatrist; schedules medication informed consent reviews; processes medication informed consent documentation; and obtains emergency treatment orders. Communicates with attending psychiatrist during and between scheduled clinics on status of residents and assessments from medical, nursing, behavioral services, and facility administration that may impact psychiatric interventions. Serves as the professional liaison between Psychiatry and all professional disciplines to promote quality and holistic mental health care. Obtains vital signs, EKGs, height, weight, and visual acuity. Observe and document acute complaints or injured Residents. Notify the RN or physician as appropriate. Obtain labs, insert catheters, start IVs, administer medications and oxygen and documents on the MAR according to policy and procedure, assist with suturing. Change sterile and non-sterile dressings. Notate physician orders and follow through with treatments, diagnostic procedures, diets, labs, x-rays. Document in the nurses notes according to policy and procedure. Administer immunizations, IM antibiotics and PPDs. Assists physicians during exams. Check emergency equipment for proper functioning. Document refrigerator temperatures and report abnormal readings. Maintain adequate supplies within the OPC. Serves and protects the Sunland community by adhering to professional standards, Sunland policies, federal, state, ACHA, and local requirements. Functions as a generalist in assigned units on rotating schedule one weekend per month and on holiday rotation with other non-generalist nurse positions. Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of RN experience.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Skill in the use of medical equipment and instruments used in providing nursing care.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity in providing nursing care.
  • Ability to administer medications and treatments.
  • Ability to work with patients.
  • Ability to interpret and follow medical instructions.
  • Ability to observe patients' symptoms and reactions to treatment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to analyze complex reports and determine the service utilization habits of clients and to evaluate the appropriateness of that utilization.

  • Preferred experience in working with Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health and/or working with a psychiatrist.
