The Labor and Delivery (LD) RN ismitted to provide superior, personalized, andpassionate care to pregnant women, their newborns, and families. This unit provides 24/7 care in a family centered manner. Patients cared for by LD RNs are women of childbearing age who are pregnant, and their newborns as well as to selected antepartum and postpartum patients experiencingplications during and after childbirth. This unit is a safe and nurturing environment with consideration given to age and developmental level. As an LD RN, you must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to provide care to the appropriate age of the patient. To provide care to childbearing women and their newborns the LD RN must use their knowledge to assess the physical and emotional needs of the patient/family and develop a plan of care that incorporates these principals. The LD RN must have the ability to implement the plan, and to supervise others with the implementation and assess its effectiveness.
