About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and dependable Registered Nurse (RN) to provide healthcare services in a medium-security correctional facility for an incarcerated male population . This position supports staffing needs by covering vacant shifts, regular days off, sick leave, and vacations for permanent nursing staff. The RN will work up to 40 hours per week and must be flexible to work weekends and holidays as required. The role involves operating semi-independently , with physician support available on-call.

Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Minimum 1 year of acute care RN experience (Med/Surg, ER, ICU, or similar)
• Current CPR certification
• Annual TB test
• Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft applications; ability to learn a DOS-based system
• Strong adherence to security protocols and facility policies
• Ability to work independently, remain dependable, and manage a correctional healthcare environment

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience working in a correctional or secure healthcare setting
• Previous employment within New York State correctional healthcare systems (preferred but not required)

Responsibilities

• Assess and respond to inmate and staff medical complaints
• Review and carry out physician orders and prescriptions
• Enter laboratory work and generate medical requisitions
• Administer medications in accordance with protocols
• Perform end-of-shift narcotics, sharps, and tool counts
• Respond to emergency sick calls and medical emergencies, including AED use
• Provide vaccinations
• Deliver wound care and diabetic care
• Conduct inmate health education and ongoing evaluations
• Maintain accurate documentation using computerized systems
