About The Position

Reporting to the Patient Care Services Director/Shift Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high quality, individualized patient care using the components of the nursing process.

Requirements

  • BSN preferred
  • Minimum 1 year acute care experience or successful completion of ICU internship program preferred.
  • CA RN license
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • TCAR
  • National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Responsibilities

  • Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
  • Adheres to DMC practices for pain management with specific consideration of patient’s functional/ developmental age, gender, cultural, and/or personal preferences.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of restraints.
  • Adheres to DMC practices for moderate sedation. Identifies resources for guidelines to ensure safe care and monitoring of patients.
  • Identifies patients at risk for abuse as well as associated signs and symptoms. States mandatory reporting requirements for healthcare professionals.
  • Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient’s functional and developmental age.
  • Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills, including: (1) medication administration, (2) intravenous therapy, (3) management of indwelling catheters and drains, and (4) safe use of any medical equipment, such as glucose meters, IV pumps, etc.
  • Completes comprehensive neurological examinations on patients, utilizing developmental differences to interpret assessment findings. Cares for the critically injured trauma patient and patients with neurological injuries, including patients who have undergone neuro-surgical intervention.
  • Keeps Manager/Director informed when difficulties and/or unusual situations occur.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures.
  • Provides compassionate and caring support to families.
  • Determines the presence and type of Advance Directive, as appropriate. Contacts appropriate resources to assist the patient and family as needed.
  • Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice. Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.
  • Practices Universal Precautions while providing patient care and performing other hospital services.
  • Communicates and follows the organization’s chain of command for notification of patient care and/or service issues
  • Expresses and accepts feedback in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and use time efficiently to complete work on time and in an organized manner.
  • Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences; modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the identified groups.
  • Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder, and are to be documented on the Annual Evaluation Checklist.
  • Performs duties in a manner that provides for the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the critically ill patient with multiple-system failure or unstable surgical patient, including, but not limited to, patients with invasive lines and/or requiring hemodynamic monitoring and patients who are ventilator dependent.
  • Accurately administers complex pharmaco-therapeutics. Calculates drip rates based on age, weight or other parameters. Follows established procedures for medication administration.
  • Accurately analyzes complex ECG rhythms. Takes appropriate actions based on the cardiac rhythm and the patient’s condition in accordance with established procedures and MD orders.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills to manage complex patient care situations in accordance with DMC policies and procedures and standards of care.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for departmental/hospital clinical performance improvement initiatives by utilizing appropriate communication channels (i.e. through shift supervisor, director, or committee representatives) and implementing committee approved performance improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates noise reduction efforts in the department, and assists in maintaining traffic control in the department.
  • Knowledge and understanding of age specific care requirements including special needs patients.
  • All other duties as assigned.
