About The Position

Sentara Obici Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to join their Surgical Short Stay (SSU) Observation Unit. This is a full-time, night shift position (7p to 7a) with rotating weekends in Suffolk, VA. The Observation/Short Stay Unit is an 18-bed department specializing in observation, post-procedural monitoring, and short-term treatments such as TIA workups, stress tests, and radiology procedures, with a typical maximum patient stay of two days. Nurses can expect 6-8 patient discharges per shift and a nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:5 to 1:6. The unit is supported by a team of unit coordinators, educators, and a nurse manager, and benefits from low staff turnover and a collaborative culture, with additional PCT staff available for patient care. This environment is suitable for both new graduate nurses and experienced Registered Nurses looking to expand their skills. Sentara Obici Hospital is recognized as a certified stroke center and holds Magnet designation for excellence in patient care.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing
  • Registered nursing License
  • BLS required within 90 days of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN
  • 1 year of acute care
  • Previous healthcare experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process.
  • Adhere to standards of practice including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care (teaching and health promotion), and evaluation.
  • Adhere to standards of professional performance including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice/nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.
  • Possess clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.
