About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) for the Orthopedic Unit is responsible for caring for patients undergoing total joint replacements and spine surgery, as well as managing other surgical and non-surgical orthopedic issues. The role includes opportunities for IVs, PCAs, nursing treatments, medication administration, SCDs, and dressings. The unit also functions as a trauma step-down unit, with a focus on pain management, primarily for middle to older adults. As an RN, you will delegate, supervise, and provide nursing care to a designated group of patients using the nursing process. You will provide age-appropriate care, participate in research when appropriate, and incorporate research findings into evidence-based clinical practice. Additionally, you will contribute to quality improvement processes and adhere to the MHS Mission, Vision, and Values, the MHS Nursing Division Mission, Vision and Philosophy, the ANA Code of Ethics, and the Illinois Nursing Act.

Requirements

  • Diploma of Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred.
  • RN license in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification per policy required.
  • National certification required for specific positions.
  • Ability to position and/or transfer an average adult patient.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing.
  • Ability to perform difficult manipulative skills such as IV insertion and IM injections.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in a BSN or MSN program.
  • National certification in nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care and age-appropriate assessment.
  • Analyze data to identify nursing problems.
  • Define individualized patient outcomes.
  • Develop an interdisciplinary, individualized plan of care in partnership with patients and families.
  • Implement specified interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes, revising the plan when indicated.
  • Delegate patient care tasks to LPNs and unlicensed assistive personnel based on job description, individual capability, and patient needs.
  • Communicate patient status and caregiver performance expectations.
  • Supervise performance of LPNs and unlicensed assistive personnel.
  • Direct performance improvement for LPNs and unlicensed assistive personnel.
  • Build teamwork when supervising and delegating to others.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and use therapeutic communication techniques.
  • Communicate relevant patient information to other members of the health team.
  • Document patient care according to Memorial policies and procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate implementation of physician’s orders.
  • Access electronic data to facilitate patient care.
  • Create and maintain a collaborative work environment.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary planning and decision making.
  • Precept new nursing employees and/or nursing students.
