About The Position

Located in the heart of Central New York, St. Joseph’s Health is nationally recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, spine surgery, and coronary intervention. We are a designated Stroke Center, a U.S. News Best Regional Hospital, and a Best Maternity Hospital. Our integrated network delivers compassionate, innovative care across the continuum, serving both patients and the community. Unit 3-1 is a fast-paced General, Urology, and Colorectal Surgery unit providing specialized care to patients undergoing surgical procedures and those with renal disease, including peritoneal dialysis (PD) at the bedside. Telemetry Class 2 unit with continuous cardiac monitoring as indicated Primarily post-operative surgical patients from PACU, with additional direct admits from surgeons’ offices and the ED Common Interventions Drain and complex wound management Wound VACs, G-tubes, J-tubes Ostomies and urostomies Peritoneal dialysis Continuous bladder irrigation Occasional chest tubes The Nurse Manager is accountable for the overall clinical, operational, and financial performance of Unit 3-1. This role provides strategic and day-to-day leadership to ensure safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care while fostering staff engagement, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Nurse Manager partners with nursing leadership, physicians, and support services to achieve organizational goals related to quality, patient experience, workforce stability, and fiscal stewardship.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Current New York State RN license
  • Minimum 3–5 years of acute care nursing experience
  • Prior nurse leadership or management experience required
  • Demonstrated strengths in communication, team development, and critical thinking
  • Commitment to continuing education and professional growth

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide 24/7 accountability for nursing practice, patient outcomes, and unit operations
  • Ensure compliance with NYS Department of Health regulations, accreditation standards, and Trinity Health policies
  • Lead initiatives to improve patient safety, quality outcomes, and satisfaction scores
  • Analyze unit-based quality metrics and implement evidence-based process improvements
  • Recruit, onboard, coach, and retain a high-performing nursing team
  • Conduct performance evaluations, corrective actions, and recognition initiatives
  • Foster a culture of shared governance, accountability, and professional growth
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for charge nurses and emerging leaders
  • Develop and manage staffing plans to ensure safe patient ratios and efficient workflow
  • Collaborate with staffing offices and leadership to address coverage needs
  • Oversee scheduling, timekeeping, and productivity management
  • Manage unit budget, including labor, supplies, and resource utilization
  • Identify opportunities for cost containment while maintaining quality care
  • Participate in strategic planning and service line initiatives
  • Partner with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and ancillary departments to optimize care delivery
  • Address patient, family, and staff concerns promptly and professionally
  • Communicate organizational priorities and changes effectively to frontline staff
