About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the ICU provides direct nursing care following the healthcare organization's established policies, procedures, and protocols. This role involves implementing and monitoring patient care plans, recording and communicating patient conditions, and coordinating care across various disciplines. The RN is responsible for executing physician and nursing orders and managing patient discharge planning with the healthcare team. Key aspects of the role include a systematic assessment of patient data (physiological, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors), identifying patient problems, and collaboratively setting measurable short- and long-range goals with patients and families. The nurse formulates and documents care plans, ensures patient safety, administers medications, provides ordered treatments, educates patients and families, and continuously evaluates patient status and care effectiveness. The position also requires care coordination, delegation, supervision, and prioritization of tasks from admission through discharge.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Continuing education requirements as defined within the CARE program.
  • One (1) year as an RN.
  • Valid current Arizona Nursing License or compact state license and ability to become Arizona Licensed in 30 days.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association.
  • Other certifications as required by individual department as noted in Attachment A.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) American Heart Association.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Other certifications as required by individual department.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and monitors patient care plans.
  • Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Serves as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.
  • Notes and carries out physician and nursing orders.
  • Assesses and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.
  • Uses a systematic, dynamic way to collect and analyze data about a patient, including physiological, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and life-style factors.
  • Performs initial assessment, re-assessment, and focused assessment based on patient condition, setting and population.
  • Makes clinical judgments about the patient’s response to actual or potential health conditions or needs.
  • Sets measurable and achievable short- and long-range goals in collaboration with the patient and family.
  • Establishes daily goals with the patient and family.
  • Formulates a plan of care.
  • Performs transition or Discharge planning.
  • Ensures patient safety.
  • Administers medication.
  • Provisions of ordered treatments.
  • Provides Patient/Family education.
  • Provides nursing care.
  • Documents in healthcare record.
  • Continuously evaluates both the patient’s status and the effectiveness of the nursing care, and modifies the care plan as needed.
  • Initiates actions with patients, families, and/or members of their healthcare team to manage and correct the sequence, timing, and/or effectiveness of patient care from admission to discharge.
