The Registered Nurse (RN) in the ICU provides direct nursing care following the healthcare organization's established policies, procedures, and protocols. This role involves implementing and monitoring patient care plans, recording and communicating patient conditions, and coordinating care across various disciplines. The RN is responsible for executing physician and nursing orders and managing patient discharge planning with the healthcare team. Key aspects of the role include a systematic assessment of patient data (physiological, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors), identifying patient problems, and collaboratively setting measurable short- and long-range goals with patients and families. The nurse formulates and documents care plans, ensures patient safety, administers medications, provides ordered treatments, educates patients and families, and continuously evaluates patient status and care effectiveness. The position also requires care coordination, delegation, supervision, and prioritization of tasks from admission through discharge.
