The position involves prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care for patients utilizing the nursing process. The nurse will provide leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary departments and other patient care team members to maintain Standards for Clinical Practice and Standards of Patient Care in the clinical setting. Participation in Quality Improvement initiatives is expected, along with involvement in patient/family teaching and discharge planning. The nurse will direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing care provided, leading and facilitating decision-making at the unit level. Assigning nursing care to team members based on patient needs and nursing staff competencies is a key responsibility. The nurse will competently perform core and specific skills, provide unit-based education to staff annually, and administer medications with a thorough understanding of their action, mode of administration, side effects, and contraindications. The role also includes implementing, transcribing, and/or countersigning physician orders, utilizing assessment skills to identify various needs of patients and their families, and communicating pertinent unit activities and workload fluctuations. The nurse will make patient rounds with physicians, assist with diagnostic tests and procedures, identify learning opportunities for self and others, and promote good public relations for the nursing department and hospital. An active role in the safe and effective administration of oncology chemotherapy is also required, with a solid understanding of its mechanism of action, modes of administration, dosage calculation, and contraindications.
