Job Summary A Dialysis RN is responsible for delivery of patient care to a mainly geriatric population through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Also directs and guides patient teaching, activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries and diseases and uses. Provides written assessment of patient on admission documents nursing interventions, patient response, effectiveness and complications and summarizes information on discharge. Summarizes assessment data and makes a nursing care plan which is written and communicated to other patient care providers. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patient. Functions within limits of State Nurse Practice Act, hospital and nursing department policies and procedures. Assesses, plans and implements instruction for patient and family need for patient and family with an emphasis on dialysis treatment. Reports patient care or management problems to Clinical Coordinator and/or Supervisor when necessary and investigates and intervenes in problem situations reporting appropriate information. Makes outpatient assignment based on acuity and staff qualifications and experience. Coordinates patient scheduling, unit routines, providing guidance to staff, orienting new staff, assuring presence and working order of emergency equipment. Understands and applies theoretical applications of hemodialysis and routines of treatment procedures. Recognizes and implements corrective procedures for complications of treatment. Performs on-site specific lab testing maintaining appropriate records and controls. Demonstrates understanding and application of dietary and medication management issues for ESRD patients. Demonstrates a working knowledge and safe use of medications specific to the Chronic Care patient population. Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-growth, using and sharing skills gained through continuing education classes. Completes annual nursing competencies. Evaluates for age-appropriate behavior motor skills and physiological norms of patients, recognizing a patient’s psychological development and modifies approaches for patients. Interview/communication techniques are age-appropriate.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree Nursing required
  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred
  • Registered Nurse - State License
  • BLS - required
  • 2-3 years Hemodialysis required
  • Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during day shift, evening shift, and weekend hours.
  • Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.
  • Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations.
  • Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all department-related equipment as described on the Department checklist.
  • Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.
  • Ability to Stand and walk approximately ninety percent (90%) of shift, with frequent climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and helping to lift objects and/or patients.
  • Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties.
  • Ability to differentiate colors.
