About The Position

The CIT Registered Nurse will apply the nursing process, technical, and clinical skills to meet the needs of the patient and family, while building healing relationships with our patients that focus on recovery and survivorship. This unit is a 21-bed unit that provides leading- edge, collaborative, and comprehensive care for adult patients with a variety of blood and bone marrow disorders. As a part of the VCU Massey Cancer Center, the largest adult stem cell and bone marrow transplant provider in all of Virginia, we offer the latest FDA- approved CAR-T immunotherapies, clinical trials testing new and promising forms of cellular immunotherapies, as well as all forms of stem cell and bone marrow transplantation. We provide both outpatient and inpatient services in the same facility, and provide a suite of support services that range from helping minimize symptoms and side effects to coping with the cognitive, emotional, and psychological effects of cancer. A typical shift for our nurse includes a team of mixed registered nurses, clinical coordinators, and Patient Care Techs (PCTs) caring for adult patients. We are dedicated to providing a fulfilling and high energy work environment. Our nurses and PCTs have a unique perspective on compassion and a strong belief in the enormous potential of cancer survivorship. Through respectful, attentive and compassionate care, our multidisciplinary care team builds healing relationships with our patients that focus on recovery and survivorship. We work closely with a large team of supportive care specialists to address the psychological and social impacts of cancer for our patients. We are: 21 bed unit, 1:2-3 Nurse to Patient Ratio, and 1:3-4 for lower acuity patients, Dedicated to providing each patient and their family innovative techniques and treatments, Part of VCU Health’s Massey Cancer Center, the largest adult stem cell and bone marrow transplant provider in Virginia and the first in Virginia to offer a FDA- approved CAR-T cell therapy.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (for hire).
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia (for continued employment).
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (for continued employment).
  • For Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience.
  • For Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • For Clinical Nurse I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
  • For Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III: Academic Health Care Experience.
  • For Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III: Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
  • For Clinical Nurse I, Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
  • For Clinical Nurse III: Certification in specialty area.

Responsibilities

  • Apply the nursing process, technical, and clinical skills to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Build healing relationships with our patients that focus on recovery and survivorship.
  • Work closely with physicians and conduct in-depth evaluations before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
  • Administer chemotherapy and biotherapy.
  • Perform blood product transfusions.
  • Infuse cellular therapy.
  • Manage symptoms.
  • Review laboratory findings.
  • Manage central line including specialized intravenous infusions and clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with the team to assess and address goals of patient care.
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment options.
  • Integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family (Clinical Nurse I).
  • Assist the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort (Clinical Nurse I, II, III).
  • Provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level (Clinical Nurse I).
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care (Clinical Nurse I, II, III).
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions (Clinical Nurse I, II, III).
  • Demonstrate a mastery of clinical skills and begin to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population (Clinical Nurse II).
  • Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately (Clinical Nurse II).
  • Mobilize resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families (Clinical Nurse II).
  • Assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level (Clinical Nurse II).
  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge at the unit level and begin to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population (Clinical Nurse III).
  • Anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately (Clinical Nurse III).
  • Serve as a role model in a clinical setting (Clinical Nurse III).
  • Organize work and delegate and supervise others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments (Clinical Nurse I, II, III).
  • Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practice within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
  • All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
