About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiovascular is responsible for the provision of nursing services based on standards of care and professional nursing practice prescribed in nursing education, TH orientation and education as well as TH policy and protocol. The Cardiovascular RN provides direct nursing care to both in and out-patients during cardiac stress testing, transesophageal echocardiograms, tilt table tests, electrical cardioversion, and other procedures performed in the Cardiology Service Line. The Cardiovascular RN utilizes a high level of knowledge of cardiac or chemical stress testing and effectively communicates issues with physicians. The RN will interpret data received before the procedure and use nursing judgment that is in line with safety protocols. The Cardiac Nurse must be self-directed and act independently and intervene as appropriate to resolve issues. The Cardiovascular RN is responsible for implementing the philosophy, objectives, standards of care, policies, and procedures of Cardiac Services under the supervision of the Cardiologist. In addition, the nurse monitors on-going needs of patients to ensure efficient and effective access to services and apprises radiologists and supervisory personnel of patient(s) status; provides viable and innovative solutions to problems; attends meetings/training, adheres to approved policy/procedures, represents the hospital in a professional manner, makes effective presentations. The nurse proactively and assertively addresses issues as they arise. Attends hospital wide meetings to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines as they pertain to Cardiology Service Line, the nurse facilitates the guidance of individuals through the Cardiology Service Line to ensure they understand their procedures, treatment and immediate follow up care after procedure and completes other direct service RN duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • ADN Required.
  • BSN Preferred.
  • Minimum of two years previous experience in a cardiac stress lab, cardiovascular care, critical care, emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, PACU or similar setting Required.
  • Must be trained and verified by a cardiology physician.
  • Must be proficient in using Electronic Health Record (EMR) for patient-level care and coordination.
  • Must possess excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Must have ability to collaborate with others to improve quality and address needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and compliance of Universal Tidelands Health Protocols.
  • Ability to demonstrate competence in technical aspects of non-invasive cardiac testing including operation of treadmill, ECG lead placement, ECG monitoring and rhythm identification, and treatment.
  • Possess knowledge/competency of appropriate indications/contraindications for exercise and pharmacologic stress testing.
  • Ability to demonstrate radiation safety knowledge for themselves, patients, staff members, physicians, and visitors.
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of cardiac disease states, cardiovascular and exercise physiology, and the hemodynamic responses to exercise.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, provides high quality support to physicians in meeting the medical needs of the patient.
  • Performs Exercise and/or Pharmacological Nuclear Stress tests and stress studies under the Direct Supervision of the Supervising Cardiologist.
  • Review stress test orders, to assess for appropriate use criteria by non-cardiology providers.
  • Provide proper patient identification prior to procedures, medication or any treatment.
  • Ensures medication reconciliation on admission and discharge.
  • Provide assessment and reassessment of patient prior to and post-procedure according to protocol.
  • Provide assessment of level of consciousness/pain intensity.
  • Perform pre-procedural and post procedural documentation.
  • Make sure discharge education/instructions are completed.
  • Assumes responsibility for ensuring all patients are positioned on procedure table or stretchers in a fashion to minimize potential harm.
  • Assists with ensuring that all vendors and staff are shielded.
  • Consistently wears a radiation monitoring device, wears a protective lead apron while assisting with a procedure, and recognizes distance as the primary rule for radiation safety.
