Manages the planning, promotion, and management of operations for ECMO to ensure quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Graduate of nursing, respiratory, or perfusion program
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2+ years supervisory or lead experience
  • 2+ years respiratory care experience
  • 2+ years ECMO experience
  • 2+ years nursing experience
  • Strong interpersonal, clinical, facilitation, problem solving, education, and communication skills
  • Ability to function as a clinical expert maintaining standards of practice
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary and operational improvement team
  • Ability to work within direct and dotted line reporting structures using motivation and consensus building skills
  • Current Illinois license as Respiratory Care Practitioner, Registered Nurse, or Perfusionist
  • BLS certified
  • NRP and PALS certified
  • Willingness to obtain specialty certification

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical information to Case Managers and utilization review related to appropriateness of care.
  • Understands and supports the RN/RT model and promotes participation from staff.
  • Reports critical path variances to Physicians, Perfusion, and Clinical Operations Managers of departments.
  • Manages staffing requirements, including assigning daily staff work assignments related to ECMO and enforcing appropriate utilization of resources. Reports staffing variances to Clinical Operations Directors.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Operations Directors, leads short and long term planning for clinical operations for the department, including budgetary needs.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and family care conferences.
  • Manages point of care testing related quality control and record keeping in collaboration with point of care coordinators.
  • Implements measures to improve quality of care and monitors patient satisfaction.
  • Is cognizant of patient population and facilitates patient progress on critical paths or best practice guidelines.
  • Serves as the clinical resource and mentor for staff and acts as a role model.
  • Promotes positive customer relations for effective and efficient daily operations.
  • Provides direct patient care when patient acuity is high and staffing is impacted, and supplements staffing during high volumes of surgical cases.
  • Manages the ECMO program, including ordering supplies, data collection, participation in case management, and collaboration with physicians and perfusionists.
  • Provides oversight to the ECMO transport program.
  • Projection, evaluation, monitoring, and upkeep of all ECMO equipment and supplies.
  • Evaluates current and new equipment, supplies, and facilities based on effectiveness, cost efficiency, and dependability.
  • Tracks all purchases of equipment and/or supplies and identifies invoices to be paid prior to submission for payment approval.
  • Utilizes the performance improvement process to assess outcomes and contribute to the design of improved processes. Makes recommendations for patient care to achieve quality and superior ECMO services.
  • Manages performance improvement projects.
  • Implements monitoring systems to evaluate quality and adequacy of patient care.
  • Communicates monitoring results to Physicians, Managers, Directors, and other healthcare team members as appropriate.
  • Implements measures to correct deficiencies.
  • Demonstrates expertise in standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Performs evaluation of current and new ECMO equipment and supplies.
  • Utilizes literature, external resources, internal input, feedback, and other resources to support global evaluation.
  • Assesses rental and/or repair needs.
  • Processes all incoming equipment and supplies.
  • Processes special orders via purchasing as necessary.
  • Promotes and supports an environment conducive to staff growth, development, job engagement, and professional autonomy.
  • Implements retention and recruitment strategies.
  • Manages and implements programs to improve morale, employee behavior, working conditions, and communication.
  • Manages development, implementation, and evaluation of orientation programs for the Children’s Hospital, department specific orientation, and ECMO specialist orientation.
  • Develops competency based education for associates related to ECMO.
  • Fosters ongoing professional education through performance evaluation, needs assessment, and professional goal development.
  • Requires participation and leadership in educational opportunities.
  • Provides timely performance review feedback with emphasis on development goals.
  • Provides and implements feedback related to disciplinary action and reports.
  • Tracks and maintains education compliance and ECMO hours for all ECMO specialists.
  • Coordinates and develops simulation education and ongoing education with the physician director and pediatric perfusionist for all ECMO specialists.
  • Responsible for personal and professional growth and development.
  • Keeps abreast of current standards of care through literature, educational events, internal and external resources, and networking.
  • Maintains memberships and actively participates in professional and community organizations.
  • Participates in professional growth activities through continuing education and professional organizations.
  • Actively seeks advanced credentialing, training, and education commensurate with the clinical expert role.
  • Actively participates in hands on patient care to maintain skills.
  • Assures compliance with policies and procedures through one on one assessment and supervision.
  • Provides immediate feedback upon deviation from policy and reports incidents to the Inpatient Operations Director.
  • Develops ECMO related policies and procedures.
  • Consults in partnership with the Chief Perfusionist (pediatrics) and Medical Director(s) to integrate ECMO standards of practice.
  • Coordinates development of Clinical Practice Guidelines in conjunction with ELSO guidelines, AARC guidelines, American Academy of Pediatrics, Medical Director(s), Chief Perfusionist, and Director.
  • Consults with leadership to ensure standards of practice are implemented and supported at the staff level.
  • Promotes patient safety through reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Performs assigned tasks as requested by the Director of Inpatient Operations.
  • Acts as a liaison between staff, physicians, nursing, healthcare providers, managers, and directors.
  • Reports unusual occurrences, including hazardous or life threatening situations, to leadership and Patient Safety.
  • Assists with tracking patient related procedures, charges, and associated paperwork (ELSO data/records).
