The position involves prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care for patients utilizing the nursing process. The nurse will provide leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary departments and other patient care team members to maintain Standards for Clinical Practice and Standards of Patient Care in the clinical setting. Participation in Quality Improvement, patient/family teaching, and discharge planning is also required. The nurse will direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing care provided, leading and facilitating decision-making at the unit level. Assigning nursing care to team members based on patient needs and nursing staff competencies is essential. The nurse must competently perform core and specific skills, provide unit-based education to staff annually, and administer medications with knowledge of their action, mode of administration, side effects, and contraindications. The role includes implementing, transcribing, and/or countersigning physician orders, utilizing assessment skills to identify various needs of patients and their families, and communicating pertinent unit activities. The nurse will make patient rounds with physicians, assist with diagnostic tests and procedures, identify learning opportunities for self and others, and promote good public relations for the nursing department and hospital. An active role in the safe and effective administration of oncology chemotherapy is also required.
