About The Position
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Hematology/Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit - 2 Bles is an 18-bed, newly renovated unit that specializes in Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant. It is one of two adult inpatient oncology units at MedStar Georgetown, serving patients from the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, which has been operational since 1971. The center was designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1974 and achieved comprehensive status in 1990. The mission of Lombardi is to enhance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer through innovative research, patient care, community outreach, and training future cancer specialists. The patient population includes individuals with various hematologic diseases and cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, ITP, and sickle cell anemia, as well as autologous PBSC transplant patients and those with oncologic solid tumors. Nurses in this unit provide expert care, often utilizing hematology/oncology research protocols. In 2013, MedStar Georgetown partnered with Hackensack University Medical Center to establish a Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation Program, enhancing access to lifesaving treatments in the Washington, DC area. The program received FACT accreditation for autologous transplants in 2016.
