The Pre/Post-Operative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the patient’s admission to the facility, comprehensive pre-operative care, immediate post-operative care, and stabilization for admission to the inpatient department or return to the home environment. This role involves utilizing specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care, acting under established protocols, policies, and provider orders, and maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. The nurse will continually perform thorough and accurate patient assessments, anticipate needs, and report relevant findings to the appropriate provider. Key aspects include overseeing pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring all necessary requirements are met prior to transferring patients to the operating room, and providing holistic and thorough discharge education. The position also requires demonstrating continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients in the perioperative setting, demonstrating good nursing knowledge and rationale for actions, and competence in various skills such as vascular access, procedural sedation, cardiac monitoring, and medication administration. The role also involves maintaining department cleanliness, safe operation of equipment, efficient supply utilization, and prioritizing patient, self, and others' safety. Teamwork is crucial, involving timely reporting, flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, participation in patient care planning, and effective communication with team members, reception, and supervisors. The role also supports quality activities through participation in committees and educational programs, making post-operative phone calls, utilizing critical thinking, performing daily assignments, developing communication skills, and actively participating in patient and employee safety by following OSHA and other standards.
