About The Position

The Pre/Post-Operative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the patient’s admission to the facility, comprehensive pre-operative care, immediate post-operative care, and stabilization for admission to the inpatient department or return to the home environment. This role involves utilizing specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care, acting under established protocols, policies, and provider orders, and maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. The nurse will continually perform thorough and accurate patient assessments, anticipate needs, and report relevant findings to the appropriate provider. Key aspects include overseeing pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring all necessary requirements are met prior to transferring patients to the operating room, and providing holistic and thorough discharge education. The position also requires demonstrating continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients in the perioperative setting, demonstrating good nursing knowledge and rationale for actions, and competence in various skills such as vascular access, procedural sedation, cardiac monitoring, and medication administration. The role also involves maintaining department cleanliness, safe operation of equipment, efficient supply utilization, and prioritizing patient, self, and others' safety. Teamwork is crucial, involving timely reporting, flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, participation in patient care planning, and effective communication with team members, reception, and supervisors. The role also supports quality activities through participation in committees and educational programs, making post-operative phone calls, utilizing critical thinking, performing daily assignments, developing communication skills, and actively participating in patient and employee safety by following OSHA and other standards.

Requirements

Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing
Possession of valid state license as Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas
Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required (BCLS may be obtained individually or will be accepted without individual BCLS card with current ACLS documentation)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required within 60 days of hire
Minimum of one-year experience in Preop, PACU, Emergency, or ICU

Nice To Haves

BSN desired
One-year perioperative experience in surgery center or hospital setting preferred

Responsibilities

Utilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care
Act under established protocols, policies, and provider orders
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
Oversee patient's pre-operative and/or postoperative care, considering both physical and psychosocial needs
Continually perform thorough and accurate patient assessment, anticipate needs, and report relevant assessments to the appropriate provider
Oversee completion and availability of requested preoperative testing and report abnormal results to appropriate provider
Document assessments and care in medical record accurately and in a timely manner
Provide patient and family education on perioperative procedures and expectations
Ensure patients have met all necessary requirements (i.e. testing, consent forms, assessments, etc.) prior to transferring them to operating room
Ensure patients are optimized for discharge or transfer to inpatient unit; provide holistic and thorough discharge education and/or report
Demonstrate continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients on the perioperative setting based on individualized needs
Demonstrate good nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions
Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and competence of skills identified for position including, but not limited to: Initiation and maintenance of vascular access, Procedural sedation, Cardiac and vital sign monitoring, Assistance with peripheral nerve blocks, Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, Medication reconciliation, Airway management, Medication administration, Repositioning/comfort measures, Specimen Handling
Always maintain cleanliness and order of department
Demonstrate the safe operation of equipment and follow procedures for reporting and correcting damaged equipment and/or unsafe situations
Utilize supplies safely, effectively, and efficiently, assisting with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies
Keep safety of patient, self, and others a primary concern always; recognize emergency situations and respond quickly and efficiently following hospital policies and procedures to prevent adverse outcomes
Supervise and direct, as delegated, the activities of non-professional personnel
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors
Report for work in a timely manner and maintain good attendance record
Show flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, i.e. working late or early, changing schedules, etc.
Participate as a team member in planning and implementation of patient care; take responsibility for an adequate patient load, review schedule for next day
Respond to call backs in a timely and professional manner
Utilize work time effectively
Demonstrate the ability to work cohesively with other team members
Monitor surgery schedule continually, communicating arrivals, cancellations, delays; communications with reception desk, contacts patients or surgeons who are late
Report pertinent information to supervisor
Contribute to increased morale and positive attitude in the department and facility
Demonstrate the ability to accept and work through change
Require minimal supervision in daily tasks
Participate in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care
Make post-operative phone calls, assessing patient status and reporting any pertinent information to supervisor and/or anesthesiologist
Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills, making suggestions for improvement
Perform and document daily assignments, including general housekeeping and maintenance of work environment
Develop communication skills and promote inter-departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care
Actively participate in patient and employee safety by following OSHA and other standards reviewed in annual education
Maintain current BLS and ACLS certification and any other advanced certifications required
