About The Position

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. Applicants who are new to Mayo Clinic or our Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday-Friday for the first week, and then 3-4 days/week for the following 4-5 weeks. Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification. What do Pre-Op/PACU Nurses do at Mayo Clinic? Focuses on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure, however they do not perform the actual surgery. This includes Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU and Phase 2 PACU. Assess, quickly identify and resolve pre-operative issues. Starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-operative medications and performing pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures. In the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), the nurse will provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program.
  • All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with a RN start date after April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Arizona and Florida - Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Midwest - Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Positions that are not on campus may not require current Basic Life Support (BLS) competency as determined by the work area.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
  • ACLS required for Florida.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
