About The Position

The Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) Registered Nurse is a vital member of the perioperative care team, responsible for assessing and preparing patients for anesthesia and surgery. This role involves comprehensive evaluation of the patient's medical history, physical status, and social factors to identify potential risks and optimize their health prior to the surgical procedure. The PAT RN plays a crucial role in patient safety, education and collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth and successful surgical experience.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of nursing
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse License in Ohio
  • BLS certification
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of recent acute care nursing experience, preferably in ED, PACU or Perioperative services
  • Experience in PAT testing highly desirable but not mandatory
  • Experience with Meditech preferred but not mandatory
  • Excellent critical thinking and assessment skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and patient education skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other computer applications.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia pharmacology, and common medical conditions.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
  • Empathy, compassion and a patient-centered approach to care
  • Ability to maintain composure and respond effectively in stressful situations

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough and comprehensive pre-anesthesia assessments, medication list and allergies on a diverse patient population, including adults, geriatrics and possibly pediatrics, based on facility scope by means of telephone interviews.
  • Obtain detailed medical history, including current medications, allergies, past surgical experiences, family history, social habits (smoking, alcohol, drug use) and review of systems.
  • Review and interpret diagnostic tests, including EKG's, lab results (CBC, BMP, coagulation studies, etc), chest X-rays, and other imaging studies as ordered.
  • Identify and escalate abnormal findings, potential contraindications for surgery/anesthesia, and high risk factors to the anesthesiologist and/or surgeon.
  • Provide clear and concise pre-operative instructions, including NPO guidelines, medication management and what to expect on the day of surgery.
  • Address patient questions and concerns, providing emotional support and alleviating anxiety.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesiologists and other healthcare team members.
  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists and surgeons to develop individualized anesthesia plans based on patient assessment and medical history.
  • Order pre-operative tests and consultations (e.g., cardiology, pulmonology) as directed by the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
  • Identify potential complications and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Ensure all necessary medical clearances are obtained before surgery.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and collaborate effectively with all members of the perioperative team.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures and safety protocols, including infection control guidelines.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and professional development activities.
  • May be involved in phone triage for pre-operative calls and addressing patient concerns.
