The Registered Nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) collaborates with physicians to provide a comprehensive plan of care aimed at returning patients to optimal health. This role involves providing bedside nursing care, executing medical orders, and overseeing the functions of Nurse Assistants, Patient Care Associates, OB Care Associates, Surgical Service Assistants, Nursing Clerks, and Psychiatric Technicians. The nurse is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the care plan and ensuring efficient time management of peers and self, while also managing department resources and ordering supplies as needed. The position requires the ability to perform various assessment techniques, including monitoring cardiac rhythms and managing airways, to identify potential or actual problems related to anesthesia and surgical procedures. The nurse must consult with anesthesiologists or physicians when appropriate, utilizing assertive communication skills, and must be proficient in the use and troubleshooting of specialty equipment such as blood glucose monitors, IV pumps, bladder scanners, ARJO lifts/slides, and EKG machines.
