About The Position

Indiana University Health is looking for passionate, experienced nurses to join our team and collaborate with top medical professionals. We have an exciting and rewarding Full Time opportunity available at the Indiana Poison Center, based at Methodist Hospital! This position is in a call center environment and will be responsible for managing inquiries concerning poison exposures received via a 24-hour emergency telephone line. The incumbent triages and provides accurate and complete management information to the public, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical personnel, and other health care providers. This position currently qualifies for a NEW hourly wage differential in addition to standard shift and holiday differentials. More details about this differential will be provided during the interview process. This individual should have 3-5 years of bedside nursing experience in an ICU or ED setting. There is an on-call requirement, 3 days per 6-week schedule block.

Requirements

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • 3-5 years of bedside nursing experience in an ICU or ED setting

Responsibilities

  • Triages incoming phone calls to ensure poison exposures receive priority assistance and documents all required case information in the computerized patient management system. Assesses probable level of toxicity by researching available databases for each poison exposure. Communicates with expert consultants as needed.
  • Recommends and directs home management or initiates referral to appropriate medical facility. Notifies health care facilities of impending arrival, history, and treatment recommendations. Follows up on each potentially toxic case to ensure effective treatment is provided.
  • Answers questions pertaining to drug toxicity and medical information for calls where no poison exposure exists. Investigates media or other reports of toxic hazards to the public and dispenses accurate information and recommendations to requests for information about same.
  • May assist in the development and presentation of education programs to the public on the topic of poison prevention and health care providers on poison exposure management as interested
  • Obtains certification from AAPCC as a CSPI (Certified Specialist in Poison Information) by successfully completing the CSPI Exam within 3 attempts
  • Provides supervision and training to new employees and health care professional students during rotations through the Indiana Poison Center
