About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee) implements, supervises and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge, plans with consideration of the aging process throughout the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Requirements

  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
  • Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients.
  • Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
  • Twelve (12) months of Medical/Surgical strongly preferred. Critical care experience highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care.
  • Provides leadership by delegating, supervising and participating in safe nursing care activities provided by ancillary personnel.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient care and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team, patient, family and community services regarding the patient care outcome/discharge planning.
  • Assesses and provides appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs.
  • Participates in unit-based quality improvement and research activities.
  • Utilizes all available resources to provide quality, cost effective patient care.
  • Meets and maintains clinical competencies measured by pre-determined credentialing standards, mandatory/safety education, and completion of Basic Life Support and ACLS/PALS as appropriate.
  • Identifies growth needs and participates in educational opportunities and professional organizations.
  • Serves as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel.
  • Assumes charge nurse responsibility for the patient care unit as delegated.
  • Successfully cares for patients receiving all types of non-invasive and invasive ventilatory interventions
  • Monitors and interprets end tidal CO2
  • Interprets blood gas results
  • Assists with intubation
  • ECG monitoring and arrhythmia recognition, defibrillation, cardioversion, drug intervention, and internal and external pacing.
  • Cares for patient with congenital heart defect
  • Hemodynamic monitoring including arterial line and central venous pressure monitoring
  • Performs neurovascular checks /Utilizes Doppler for pulse assessment
  • Obtains a 12 lead EKG
  • Manages an EVD
  • Monitors ICP and delivers appropriate interventions
  • Proficient in Glasgow Coma Scale assessment
  • Manages a lumbar drain
  • Maintains spinal precautions
  • Cares for patient with spinal cord injury
  • Manages immediate post-operative phase of complex surgeries including (but not limited to) neurosurgical, orthopedic , spinal, plastic, vascular, otolaryngology, and complex general surgical.
  • Provides education to patient according to age and developmental level.
  • Evaluates the patient’s and/or families/caregivers response to teaching using teach back and GetWell Network methodologies.
  • Care and management of patient receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Care and management of patient receiving continual renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Care and management of a patient with >20% BSA burns (see burn center orientation checklist)
  • Care and management of the post-operative kidney transplant patient
  • Care and management of the stroke patient including responding as part of stroke team and administering tPA
  • Care and management of patient requiring maximal personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Care and management of patient with an oncological emergency
  • Safely and effectively travel with critically ill pediatric patients throughout institution.
  • Utilizes available smart pump technology to safely deliver vasoactive, sedation, and other high risk meds to pediatric patients.
  • Monitors patient during sedation for procedure
  • Responds to pediatric code blue and pediatric rapid response team calls throughout institution
  • Care of the patient and family at end of life
  • knowledgeable of palliative care therapies.
  • Complies with standards of care for bereavement in the care of parents and families who are experiencing the loss of a child
  • Care of patient who has agreed to organ donation/support of parents/families
  • Presents nursing report at interdisciplinary rounds
  • Participates in unit based huddles supporting culture of safety
