The pediatric Gastrointestinal (GI) RN provides nursing support to pediatric patients with complex gastrointestinal conditions. The RNs for this specialized clinic deliver nuanced patient health education, assistance with test result interpretation, symptom management, coordination of long-term care needs, and procedural testing. The RN's role is critical to disease management outcomes. The RNs in this ambulatory clinic position manage pediatric patients across a variety of GI sub-specialty clinics. These include motility procedures, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic, liver clinic, celiac disease clinic, and nutrition support clinics. The nurses in this role work at the top of their scope when evaluating patient symptoms over the phone or through patient online messaging. The pediatric GI RN has an expert understanding of specific GI assessments and questions needed to determine the location of inflammation and collaborate with the provider to manage symptoms. They have clinical judgement to know when to suggest supportive care or escalate to the provider for further evaluation or change to the treatment plan. The nurses also assist with coordination of patients in multidisciplinary clinics such as Aerodigestive Clinic and Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) clinic. The RN in this role is often the primary contact for the families to answer questions and ensure the appropriate testing and accommodations are prepared for patients receiving coordinated care. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship.
