About The Position

The Overnight Registered Nurse provides skilled nursing care, health supervision, and emergency response for students residing in a residential school program during overnight hours. The RN ensures the physical well-being of students, administers prescribed medications and treatments, responds to medical emergencies, and collaborates with residential and educational staff to maintain a safe and supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure
  • Current and valid MA DESE School Nurse license preferred
  • Associates Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities during overnight hours
  • Knowledge of the diverse health, social, and educational needs of students and families
  • Comprehensive knowledge of school health programs, philosophy, and objectives
  • Certified in CPR
  • Pediatric, psychiatric, ambulatory care, emergency and/or residential/school nurse experience preferred
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills and proficient with Mac applications and Google Workspace
  • A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language preferred, willingness to learn required
  • ASL Classes may be required based on ASL fluency
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Strong detail, organizational, triage, assessment, communication, and documentation skills
  • Must be physically able to perform all duties of the job including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, typing, prolonged standing or sitting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overnight nursing coverage for the residential school program, ensuring continuous health monitoring and student safety.
  • Perform nursing assessments, triage, and interventions as needed; initiate emergency protocols when required.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, on-call medical providers, administrators, and residential staff regarding student health issues.
  • Develop a care plan for students and provide direction to the employees and/or implements directions provided by the parents and/or physicians.
  • Medical and psychiatric assessments.
  • Planned and emergency medical aid to students.
  • Liaison to the emergency room, Healthcare Providers, parents and administrator on call, related to students medical and psychiatric needs.
  • Medication preparation and delegation, as needed and certain medical procedure delegation to unlicensed personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, medication management, and safety procedures.
  • Prepare reports and handoff communication for daytime nursing and administrative staff.
  • Maintain health record compliance in all areas of nursing operation.
  • Maintain nursing supplies and ensure emergency equipment is available and functional.
  • On call responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.
