About The Position

The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) will work in a 20-bed operative unit that's purpose is to provide intra-operative nursing care to veterans requesting elective surgical interventions in addition to meeting the urgent and emergent surgical needs of our veteran population. The OR delivers complex surgical care including cardiothoracic (including open heart), neurosurgical, orthopedic, ENT, GYN, general, colorectal, podiatry, ophthalmology, urologic, vascular and oral surgery. RNs in the OR need competencies unique to this clinical area including circulating and scrub nurse duties and consisting of peri-operative core competencies as well as surgical subspecialty competencies in cardiovascular/peripheral surgery, ENT surgery, Dental/oral surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology Surgery, GYN surgery, General/Colorectal Surgery, Neurosurgery, Gynecology Surgery, Urology surgery, Plastic, and Podiatry Services.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care of the surgical patient
  • Demonstrated professional communication and conduct
  • Responsible for contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidenced-based nursing standards of practice
  • In collaboration with the nurse management team, creates and sustains a positive work environment which enhances patient care delivery and professional development of team members
  • Clean Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) per Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Compliance with various Isolation Precautions and Infection Control Guidelines
  • Compliant with Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behaviors (PMDB) training and practices
  • Work with key interdisciplinary team members including the following: Anesthesia department (CRNA and MDA), Surgeons, Physician assistants/Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Coordinators, Surgery Center and PACU nursing
  • Communicates with and utilizes other disciplines to facilitate treatment planning and implementation
  • With few exceptions, participates effectively in team meetings, treatment planning conferences, etc.
  • Collaborates with divergent multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care intraoperatively
  • Maintains required competencies related to specific surgical procedures
  • Serves as a role model for a collaborative team membership and communicates effectively within the team and with interdisciplinary, supportive departments
  • Develops and/or provides education for staff to meet specific patient care needs on the unit
  • Promotes evidence-based best practices and nurse sensitive indicators (including, but not limited to Falls Prevention, Hospital Associated Infection Prevention, Medication error prevention, Safe Patient Handling, and Skin Safety)
