About The Position

The Registered Nurse in the Open Heart Intensive Care Unit (OHICU) at York Hospital provides professional nursing care in accordance with the principles of patient and family-centered care based on the nursing process and according to the clinical standards of the hospital. The OHICU is a 10-bed unit that cares for critically ill/postoperative cardiothoracic, cardiovascular, and general surgery patients aged 18 years and older. The role includes administering treatments, monitoring patient conditions, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Requirements

• Diploma Program or Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Licensed Registered Nurse upon hire required.
• Registered Nurse Multi State License upon hire required.
• Basic Life Support certification upon hire required.
• Med/Surg or Critical Care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides and coordinates direct care in accordance with the principles of patient and family-centered care.
• Acts as a primary nurse for patients on the unit.
• Synthesizes patient data to develop outcome-driven plans.
• Safely and independently administers prescribed treatments, medications, and nursing interventions.
• Organizes and prioritizes time based on patient condition and expected workload.
• Identifies changes in patients' status and acts accordingly.
• Communicates individualized patient needs for safe handoffs during transitions of care.
• Documents patient response to interventions and progress toward outcomes.
• Identifies own areas of professional growth and development.
• Promotes a professional practice environment that supports patient safety and quality.
• Delegates aspects of care to other nursing personnel.
• Promotes collaboration and cooperation among physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
