About The Position

As a Registered Nurse in the Birthing Center at UNC Health Appalachian, you will support patients through some of the most meaningful and vulnerable moments of their lives. You'll provide compassionate, highly skilled care throughout labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum, serving patients and families with empathy, dignity, and clinical excellence. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • At least 2 years of Labor & Delivery RN experience required.
  • Current North Carolina RN license (or compact license).
  • BLS from the American Heart Association required at hire.
  • ACLS and PALS required within one year of hire.
  • Strong clinical judgment in managing obstetric patients, emergencies, and rapidly changing conditions.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and accurate data entry.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service and uphold organizational values.
  • Ability to lift, position, and transfer patients 50+ pounds.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or walking may be required.
  • Near-vision acuity for detailed tasks (20 inches or less).
  • Regular exposure to blood-borne pathogens and bodily fluids.
  • Frequent exposure to chemicals and mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Requires flexibility with irregular hours — days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
  • Continuous standing/walking for 8+ hours per shift; may require sitting >4 hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care throughout labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn transition.
  • Perform diagnostic assessments, monitor patients' conditions, and respond promptly to clinical changes or emergencies.
  • Deliver compassionate, family-centered care, especially in emotionally difficult or emergent circumstances.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, physicians, APPs, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Maintain adherence to ethical nursing standards, organizational policies, and patient safety protocols.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with providers.
  • Advocate for patients and ensure their dignity, preferences, and well-being remain central to care.
  • Support a positive work environment through teamwork, accountability, and professional conduct.
