The Outdoor School Registered Nurse provides nursing assessments, health screenings, health counseling, treatment of minor injuries or ailments, medication administration, and referral services for more in-depth medical service. The RN position is located at one of five Outdoor School sites and may be assigned to provide health services to numerous students at various campsites within the Northwest Outdoor Science School, and the assignments can change, depending on emerging student health needs. Ideal candidates for this position have interest in the field of pediatrics, interest in working in outdoor education, and desire living in close knit communities while practicing as a Registered Nurse. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. This position requires the employee to live on-site during the work week Monday-Friday. Room and board are provided. Our program operates at multiple sites in Northwest Oregon near the following communities; Vernonia, Salem, Cloverdale, Rockaway Beach, and Welches. This position is seasonal, but there may be an opportunity available to continue employment in future sessions. The employee will be compensated 50 hours per week. Weekly schedules vary from Monday-Friday or Sunday-Thursday. Most work weeks are 5 days. Due to the seasonal camp-based nature of this position, it is exempt for state overtime wage regulations.

  • Provide health supervision, counseling and leadership
  • Coordinate with students, families, school personnel, and community resources to manage students with chronic and acute health issues such as: asthma, life-threatening allergies, concussion management, substance misuse, and mental health
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, promote child centered environment, and record keeping
  • Maintain facilities for dispensary and infirmary care
  • Administer current and appropriate first aid as needed
  • Administer all medications and treatments according to physician's order
  • Assess illness and accidents and determine appropriate treatment or referral to physician or hospital
  • Make decisions on whether students should be sent home for medical reasons or remain at the Outdoor School
  • Keep record of all drugs, medicines, and first-aid treatments in ledger and electronic databases as required
  • File accident reports with supervisor
  • Support, comfort, and protect students who may have difficulty adjusting to Outdoor Science School and being away from home
  • Oversee the safe and healthful operation of the Outdoor Science School site
  • Serve as 'health advisor' to Outdoor Science School staff, teachers, kitchen staff, counselors and students, increasing their awareness of good health and safety practices
  • Maintain strong links with the state and local health department to reduce the risk of infectious disease, mental health concerns, substance misuse disorders, health education, screenings, referrals and follow up
  • Partner with the local health department to integrate current public health information into health and safety planning
  • Communicate with site supervisors and the Outdoor Science School Nurse Coordinator regarding new public health policies and procedures
  • Assure that Outdoor Science School site health policies and procedures adhere to federal, state, and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act, and are correctly implemented throughout the school system
  • Serve as a leader in the Outdoor Science School for communicable disease control
  • Current RN license and licensed to practice in the state of Oregon
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required
  • Valid driver's license and accompanying automobile insurance with ability to travel to site every week during the season
  • Preferred experience with interpreting public health guidelines
  • Room and board provided
  • Compensation for 50 hours per week
