The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients. The staff RN utilizes the nursing process by use of technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice and coordination of care with other health team members. The Neuro Critical Care Unit specializes in the treatment and care of complex neurological patients affected by ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, and seizure. We also treat neurologic diseases such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis. We provide intensive care for patients after brain and spinal surgery. We manage patients with cerebral edema, hydrocephalus, elevated ICP, hemicraniectomy, vasospasm, status epilepticus, DI, SIADH, cerebral salt wasting, and brain death. While we are specialized in neurology, the NCCU also sees ICU patients that reach beyond neurology. You will be trained on specialized equipment such as external ventricular and lumbar drains. Our unit requires and would train you to perform detailed neurological assessments and to be certified in the NIHSS. Nurses must be able to clearly communicate with Providers to ensure changes in patient status are addressed in a timely manner. On our team-oriented unit we foster a teaching/learning atmosphere as we strive to provide excellent specialty care for complex neurological patients with critical care needs.
