About The Position

The Professional Nurse role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in accordance with established standards. The nurse is responsible for comprehensive documentation and demonstrating professional competence while ensuring the dignity and worth of each patient is communicated through care delivery.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited program within 24 months of employment if hired after September 1, 2010, and obtain a BSN degree within five years of employment.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required within one year.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and organize patient data systematically using all available resources.
  • Examine patients to determine their physical status through interviews, observations, and inspections.
  • Identify and record patients' physical and psycho-social conditions, including history and health habits.
  • Formulate care plans that prioritize patient needs and involve patient and family participation.
  • Collaborate with the health team to address patient needs.
  • Identify educational needs and coping mechanisms for patients.
  • Anticipate workflow and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Respond to schedule changes and emergencies as they arise.
  • Deliver care that respects the worth and dignity of patients.
  • Adapt nursing procedures to meet individual patient needs.
  • Assist patients with daily hygiene and maintaining an acceptable appearance.
  • Involve patients and families in care when therapeutically appropriate.
  • Identify physical symptoms and changes, taking appropriate actions.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to established policies and procedures.
  • Observe behavioral and physiological changes due to medications and respond appropriately.
  • Utilize good medical and surgical asepsis in patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate skill in using necessary equipment for patient care.
  • Help patients accept their dependence or independence based on their condition.
  • Protect patients from environmental hazards.
  • Ensure patients' needs for hydration and elimination are met.
  • Address anticipated or manifest patient anxiety or distress.
  • Provide mental and social stimulation appropriate to the patient's potential.
  • Implement teaching plans using principles of teaching and learning.
  • Measure progress toward goal achievement using current data.
  • Initiate nursing actions if patients fail to progress toward pre-set goals.
  • Evaluate teaching by obtaining verbal feedback from patients or significant others.
  • Refer unmet patient needs to appropriate personnel and obtain feedback.
  • Write admission notes reflecting the patient's physical and psychological status.
  • Record patient data on the Nursing Care Plan.
  • Document progress or lack thereof in Nurse's Notes, reflecting legal and ethical aspects of charting.
  • Use graphic/flow sheets correctly when relevant to the patient's condition.
  • Write discharge notes that clearly reflect the patient's status at discharge.
  • Make decisions based on sound judgment and knowledge of facts.
  • Suggest constructive changes in patient care delivery or monitoring.
  • Participate in the review and revision of policies and procedures as directed.
  • Serve on committees as required.
  • Utilize and enforce Universal Precautions in all patient interactions.
