POSITION SUMMARY Responsible to the Director, Professional Practice & Innovation. Is responsible for the assessment of IV Therapy patients’ needs, development of the plan of care to meet those needs, implementation of nursing interventions and evaluation of nursing care based on outcomes for the neonate through geriatric age patient and the family unit. Discusses patient dynamics with providers to advise them on the most appropriate line placement according to current practice standards. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Completion of an accredited registered nurse program required; BSN preferred. Within the first year of hire/transfer, full-time and regular part-time Registered Nurses are required to complete the chemotherapy/biotherapy administration course thru the Oncology Nurses Society (ONS) and renew as required by ONS. If there are no candidates who possess the preferred qualifications for the positions, the candidate will be considered and education/training will be provided. Completes PICC online educational module within one year of hire. Must be willing to be trained to place ultrasound guided peripheral IV access lines. Remains current with vascular access and Infusion Nurses Society Standards (INS) standards. Experience: Previous RN experience preferred. Charge qualified preferred. PICC experience preferred. Prior vascular access experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Effectively functions as a team member and as a liaison between patient and staff. Supports and encourages harmonious communication skills. Job requires strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills. Communicates in highly professional manner at all times. Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with ill people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families, and co-workers at all times. Demonstrates the ability and ongoing competency to successfully perform advanced vascular access procedures. Must take directions well and be able to strictly maintain sterile fields while placing intermediate and advance practice lines. License/Certification/Registration: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Receives minimal supervision from the Director, Professional Practice & Innovation. SUPERVISION GIVEN The Registered Nurse will only have supervision of others while serving as Charge Nurse. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The nurse: Applies theoretical concepts clinical knowledge and technical skill as a basis for decisions in practice based on MNMC policies and procedures. Develops and revise organizational policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines based on current best practice standards. Collects data about the health status of the patient systematically and continually. The data are recorded, accessible and communicated to appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team. Performs peripheral intravenous therapy and central infusion therapy in accordance with current INS and best evidence practice standards. Implements the nursing care plan to achieve the identified outcomes for the patient. Evaluates the patient's responses to interventions regularly and systematically to determine progress toward achievement of outcomes and to revise the data base, nursing diagnoses, patient care needs and the plan of care. Collaborates and communicates effectively with the multidisciplinary team, including patients, supervisors, peers, and other members of the healthcare team, in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Administers chemotherapy/biotherapy as needed. Accepts responsibility and accountability for maintaining knowledge, skills and competency in IV Therapy nursing. Maintains an awareness of professional issues. Remains current on concepts, trends, scientific advances, biomedical equipment and ethics relating to IV Therapy nursing by updating knowledge and clinical skills on an ongoing basis. Serves as a recognized expert in infusion therapy, consulting and providing patient and staff education, as needed. Is accountable for patient safety and patient advocacy in the delivery of infusion therapy. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
