About The Position

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply. The BHCL Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for adhering to established policies and standards of care, and practice and for demonstrating leadership, self-direction, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care. The RN should possess understanding of ethical principles that create an environment of Veteran advocacy and is accountable for adhering to established policies and standards of care. The RN provides education to Veterans, their families, and staff members of the Behavioral Health Care Line (BHCL) and through the Medical Center. The RN has contact with a variety of patients and families/significant others for the purpose of providing nursing care, encouragement, and fostering Veterans' self-reliance and independence. The RN assesses and analyzes age and culturally specific psychosocial, medical, spiritual, and social needs of Veterans aged 17 years and above who are seeking access to Behavioral Health services. The RN responsibilities include, but are not limited to, direct patient care and assessments in our Veteran patient population. Nurses assigned to the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit are part of a dynamic team that provide Inpatient Veteran Centered care to stabilize the patient in an acute inpatient psychiatry setting and return the Veteran to the community. The acute inpatient psychiatry RN collaborates with the Veteran and the interdisciplinary treatment team to help the Veteran develop goals leading to the next step in the recovery process. The RN utilizes knowledge of nursing principles, practices and procedures, patient disease processes, ethics, interdisciplinary care plans, interpersonal and teaching skills in their daily interactions on the unit. Additional responsibilities may include use of medical equipment, and collaboration with all staff members in the care of our Veterans. As a part of the inpatient psychiatric nursing team, the acute inpatient psychiatry RN will be oriented and float between acute and geriatric psychiatric units as needed to meet the operational needs of the service. The acute inpatient psychiatry RN is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager of the assigned inpatient psychiatry unit.
