About The Position

The Informaticist Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process, influences outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team, and executes position responsibilities that demonstrates leadership, learning from experience, and systematically evaluates current practice. The Nurse Informaticist Registered Nurse exercises leadership in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of hardware and software applications integrated with the electronic health record and associated programs/applications. The Informaticist collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, including other program and service leaders at the facility/practice setting and network. They work closely to establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of Veteran Affairs staff nationwide. The Informaticist will assist in directing the provision of education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesizes available data, information, and knowledge relevant to the situation to identify patterns and variances.
  • Provides leadership at the unit/group or team level to enable healthcare capabilities and the evolution of technology adjoined to the EHR thereby delivering quality care by developing, implementing, monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing informatics tools and access to them.
  • Applies proficient skills in nursing informatics, problem-solving, and clinical knowledge/judgment to guide/support staff in planning, executing, and evaluating outcomes of unit level quality or performance improvement initiatives.
  • Develops recommendations and nursing informatics strategies to address and resolve complex issues and problems, in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Establishes formal and informal consultative relationships that can also provide professional development and mentorship opportunities.
  • Supports initiatives to improve the Veteran experience i.e., care coordination, timeliness to resolve issues, negative trends, or environment of care concerns.
  • Demonstrates leadership in patient advocacy by protecting the health, safety, and rights of patient population groups served in the immediate practice setting.
  • Leads staff to identify, analyze and address ethical issues that impact patients, caregivers and staff within the practice setting.
  • Models high reliability principles and I CARE values to improve the consistency of care delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to improve the effectiveness of communications and interactions with others, to inspire their cooperation and confidence to ensure safe and effective outcomes in the current practice setting.
  • Provides leadership at the team level to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with key partners and stakeholders that impact informatics at the facility level.
  • Provides feedback and shares knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues as evidenced by such activities as presentations at formal or informal meetings and/or professional conferences and to enhance one's own professional nursing practice.
  • Educates colleagues and/or students and serves as a preceptor, teacher and advisor for orienting staff and establishes a supportive relationship over time.
  • Assesses the immediate practice setting to identify efficient, cost-effective care delivery.
  • Utilizes best practice evidence and research findings to guide nursing informatics practice decisions at the unit/team/work group level.
  • Incorporates, promotes, and assists staff in evidence-based practice/research activities as a basis for learning, critically analyzing and interpreting for application to practice.
  • Prioritizes data collection activities based on situational needs at the unit/team/workgroup level.
