About The Position

The Registered Nurse - Infection Preventionist (IP) delivers fundamental infection control knowledge to the Veteran population and VA employees while developing and honing technical skills. The Registered Nurse - (IP) understands the concepts of behavioral change, the principles of epidemiology, the ability to collect and analyze data, basic knowledge of microbiology, basic elements of patient care practice. The Registered Nurse - Infection Preventionist is responsible for the identification and control of infectious disease processes, conducting surveillance and epidemiologic investigations, and implementing effective infection prevention strategies. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating infection control practices based on age-specific components, and following procedures per established policies and guidelines. The Registered Nurse - IP assumes responsibility for the education of staff on infection control protocols, manages infection control programs, and evaluates reusable medical devices disinfection processes. Additionally, the IP Registered Nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to influence care outcomes, ensuring patient safety and adherence to infection prevention standards throughout the continuum of care.

Responsibilities

  • Providing competent, evidence-based infection control practice
  • Conducting surveillance indicators and monitoring to identify and reduce the risk of acquiring and transmitting infections among patients, employees, visitors, and students
  • Determining appropriate resources needed to accomplish proposed plan, communicating any variance to administration and revises plan as needed
  • Providing for the systematic collection and analysis of infection data using current epidemiological principles
  • Providing programmatic outcomes that are visible at any organization level with the facility and Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN)
  • Surveillance for hospital acquired infections using National Healthcare Safety Network definitions.
  • Identification and investigation of all potential outbreaks of infection.
  • Development of measures for prevention and control of infections using the interdisciplinary approach.
  • Providing in-service education related to infection control to care teams.
  • Performance of environmental studies as necessary to investigate epidemics, augment educational efforts, and monitor sterilization activities.
  • Reviewing and revising, Infection Prevention and Control policies in conjunction with individual care teams.
  • Serving as liaison to Sterile Processing Service to assist in compliance with reusable medical devices (RMD) requirements.
  • Serving as liaison to local health departments in reporting communicable diseases and consulting on issues related to community health.
