About The Position

The Registered Nurse II provides comprehensive nursing care within Student Health Services, following established clinical procedures and protocols to assess, monitor, and respond to patient needs. This position works collaboratively with Physicians and Nurse Practitioners to plan, implement, and adjust nursing care, while exercising independent clinical judgment within SHS policies and the scope of practice defined by the Medical Board of California. The incumbent contributes to nursing and departmental policy development, supports specialized clinic operations, and plays a vital role in delivering safe, high-quality care to a diverse student population. Key Responsibilities Provide direct nursing care by assessing, observing, documenting, and reporting patient symptoms, reactions, and behaviors in accordance with established protocols. Perform triage and respond to emergent or potentially critical situations with accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism. Administer nursing treatments and procedures, including IV therapy, injections, nebulizer treatments, wound and burn care, suture removal, ECGs, and basic physical assessments. Collaborate with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and health center staff to plan, implement, and modify patient care and support specialized nursing clinics. Position Information Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June/July 2027 as the anticipated off month. Department Summary The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU’s staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Center for Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Disability Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence. Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry. Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Prior use of basic word processing software; use of electronic medical record and practice management software.
  • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • One year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional nursing principles, anatomy and physiology, medications (including narcotics), and medical supplies and equipment used in clinical practice.
  • Ability to apply nursing knowledge and clinical judgment to assess patients, perform triage, respond to emergent or critical situations, and provide timely, appropriate interventions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in clinical skills including intravenous therapy, therapeutic injections, nebulizer treatments, ECGs, basic physical assessments, and management of minor trauma such as wound care, burn care, and suture removal.
  • Ability to accurately observe, document, and report patient symptoms, behaviors, and responses to treatment, and to formulate nursing diagnoses and interventions.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, scope-of-practice requirements, and patient confidentiality standards applicable to registered nursing.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records, practice management systems, and other health center automated systems to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, and health center staff, maintaining effective professional relationships in a team-based environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to gain patient cooperation, communicate sensitively with diverse populations, and exercise tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Certification in CPR/AED
