About The Position

The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion seamlessly integrates expert pediatric specialty care with obstetrical services. This state-of-the-art facility features: - South Carolina's first and only Level 1 trauma center - Advanced Fetal Care Center - South Carolina's only Level 4 NICU - The most comprehensive pediatric heart center in South Carolina - Nationally ranked pediatric cancer care The following Pediatric and Women's Health Units will be participating in the Spring 2025 New Grad blitz. Please apply to this posting by January 14 if you are interested in any of the following areas. Peds 8 Acute Care 8 ACU is a 28-bed medical-surgical inpatient unit providing care for children ages 0–18, with some adult patients up to age 25. This secured unit features 28 private rooms, including 2 negative pressure isolation rooms, 4 rooms equipped with patient lifts, and 4 behavioral rooms. Eight beds are designated for our Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. We admit patients under multiple service lines, including general pediatrics, inpatient rehabilitation, and ENT surgical services. Common medical admissions include fever, cellulitis/abscesses, respiratory illnesses, asthma, sepsis, and hyperbilirubinemia in infants. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Youth Apprentices and Unit Secretaries Peds 9 Acute Care 9 ACU is a 26 bed Pediatric medical Surgical unit providing care for children 0-18 years with some adult patients up to age 25, as well. The average daily census on the unit is 24 with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common patient populations are general surgery, neurosurgery, urology surgery, orthopedic surgery, endocrinology, and nephrology. 9 ACU is also the epilepsy monitoring unit at SJCH, caring for patients with seizure disorders. The secured unit is composed of all private rooms. The staffing mix includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries. Peds Cancer Center SJCH Cancer and Blood Disorders is a 16 bed Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMTCT) unit providing intermediate level care for patients age 0-25 years. It is the only program in the state of South Carolina to provide BMTCT to pediatric patients. The average daily census on the unit is 15 patients, with the most common patients being those with cancer, sickle cell anemia, or receiving BMTCT. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and unit secretaries. The Registered Nurses become certified in administration of chemotherapy and BMTCT products when eligible. In addition to administration of chemotherapy, pain management during sickle cell crisis, and BMTCT, one of the unique services provided is gene therapy, a novel treatment for patients with sickle cell anemia. Pediatric palliative care and respiratory therapy are available as needed. The unit is secured and composed of all private rooms. Peds Critical Care (PICU) The Pediatric Intensive Care unit is an 28 bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0- 18 from across the state of South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, respiratory compromise, trauma, post- operative surgical patients requiring immediate intensive care support, and neurology/neurosurgery. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT, renal or peritoneal dialysis and additional complex supportive therapies . Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries with therapeutic supportive services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacist available as needed. All PICU beds are monitored beds. Peds Heart Center The Pediatric Heart Center is an AACN Beacon Award-winning unit, ranked #4 nationally by U.S. News & World Report and #2 in patient outcomes, serving as South Carolina’s referral center for all major pediatric cardiac surgeries. This 29-bed monitored unit maintains an average daily census of 28 and provides care for children of all ages with congenital and acute heart disease. Patients present with a blend of cardiac surgical and medical diagnoses, and the team delivers advanced therapies including cardiac surgery, ventricular assist devices (VAD), heart transplant, cardiac catheterization, ECMO, and CRRT, along with comprehensive supportive care. Our multidisciplinary team includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries, supported by Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, Pharmacists, and Palliative Care as needed. Nurses here gain unparalleled exposure to complex, cutting-edge cardiac care in a collaborative environment designed for professional growth and excellence. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) The 82 bed Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is in MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. Most of the beds are private rooms except for 10 semi-private rooms and 7 couplet care rooms. The couplet care rooms allow for admitted postpartum moms to be cared for by a postpartum nurse in the same room as their admitted NICU baby. The Neonatal ICU is the regional referral center for this area, providing care to premature and sick neonates. The Neonatal ICU provides medical and surgical care with the most common diagnoses including prematurity, respiratory distress, congenital heart defects and neonatal surgical conditions. In addition to respiratory and nutritional support, the NICU provides ECMO/CRRT and surgical support. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The Neonatal ICU is located on the 5th floor of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Hospital. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at a competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results. Labor & Delivery (L&D) MUSC delivers approximately 3,600 patients annually. Labor and Delivery, consists of 17 LDRs, 2 ORs, 3 PACU beds, and 4 Triage rooms. In addition to vaginal and cesarean deliveries, L&D provides operative services such as cerclage and tubal ligation. Medical support includes management of gestational/chronic diabetes, hypertension, and other high risk antepartum conditions including acceptance of high-risk maternal transports from the region. Wireless Electronic Fetal Monitoring is available in all beds. Perinatal palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Certified Surgical Technicians, and Unit Secretaries. Mother Baby (MBU) The Mother Baby Unit/Anterpartum unit is a 29-bed unit providing antepartum, postpartum and newborn care through the Couplet Care model. We also care for moms in 7 couplet care rooms in the NICU. Maternal care is provided for all stable postpartum patients, whether vaginal or cesarean. Neonatal care is provided to all low-risk infants, stable based on perinatal regionalization criteria, including therapies such as phototherapy, IV antibiotics, and low risk NAS support. Primary diagnoses for our antepartum population include preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, gestational diabetes, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians and Unit Secretaries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred.
  • RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.
  • Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
