About The Position

Under the direction of the Responsible Physician (Medical Director) and the Manager of Donor Services or designee, provides guidance and leadership, whether on-site or tele-health, for Houchin Community Blood Bank (HCBB) Blood Donor Phlebotomists at a fixed site or mobile, ensures that HCBB policies, procedures and quality system essentials are followed in regard to Donor Services (whole blood), provides an exceptional experience and follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to perform accurate donor screenings to determine donor’s eligibility, perform venipunctures, and assure donor and recipient safety.

Requirements

  • Experience in providing guidance in a team environment
  • Blood bank experience, is preferred
  • Experience with medical terminology of conditions and/or treatment
  • Use and experience with medical equipment, i.e. Sphygmomanometer, thermometer, etc.
  • Microsoft applications and computer documentation are a plus
  • Valid and current California Registered Nurse license
  • Current CPR Card
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to acknowledge verbal and non-verbal cues and respond appropriately
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail ensuring adherence to quality standards
  • Ability to problem-solve and make appropriate decisions while engaging and encouraging creative problem solving

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of all regulatory standards, HCBB policies and procedures to use as resources to ensure that donors meet all eligibility requirements for whole blood and automated collections, including autologous and directed donors
  • Label products, tubes and record documentation accurately
  • Ensures donor confidentiality
  • Accurately completes all paperwork and electronic documentation
  • Assist in training/mentoring under the supervision and at the request of management
  • Be proficient in all Donor Services procedures and maintain competencies
  • Reviews all documentation either manually or by computer to meet regulatory standards, HCBB procedures, SOPs and are in accordance with cGMP’s
  • Maintains premiere donor care, customer safety, and satisfaction during the blood collection process
  • Consistently enforce HCBB organizational work policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook across all staff by addressing concerns to administration promptly
  • Recognition and treatment of all donor reactions
  • Provides donor counseling for reactive donor screening and supplemental test results
  • Accurately review Quality Control (QC) and maintenance records as well as equipment event logs in a timely manner and act/follow up on significant results
  • Review and take required actions on Day End and Lot Release Reports
  • Designated as the physician substitute who can determine donor eligibility and collect blood from donors when the Responsible Physician (Medical Director) is not on the premises.
  • Contacts Responsible Physician (Medical Director) as necessary regarding donor eligibility issues which must be determined by the Responsible Physician (Medical Director)
  • Float between fixed sites and mobiles
  • Assist in set-up and teardown of blood collection equipment on mobiles, according to the established plan
  • Ability to travel several hours with the mobile unit
  • Understands and adheres to the policies and standards developed by Houchin Community Blood Bank
