About The Position

Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to patients during the peri-operative phase of hospitalization. This is accomplished by directly assisting the patient’s surgeon, working under his/her direction and supervision, and providing direct care to surgical patients. The primary emphasis will be on the intraoperative phase but also assume responsibility for independent nursing functions of preoperative assessment and post-operative evaluation. Requirements

  • Education - Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursing
  • Certifications - Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing
  • Requires the ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department.
  • Very Heavy work - exerting over 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or more than 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force occassionally (up to 33% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects.
  • Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates mastery of sterile technique in all areas of surgery (e.g. preps, sterile supplies), as evidenced by observation of the surgical team.
  • Follows proper procedure in identifying and correcting breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Performs first assisting intervention under the direction and supervision of the operating surgeon(s)
  • Understands and provides careful tissue manipulation.
  • Proficient in retracting, maintaining exposure of the operative area through use of instruments, suctioning, and sponging.
  • Provides hemostasis by several methods and possesses the knowledge to select and perform this by electrocautery, sponging/pressure, collagen application, clamping, tying, laser units, and other chemical agents which promote coagulation.
  • Sutures skillfully using appropriate sutures and techniques for the tissue and situation.
  • Performs wound closure under the direct supervision of the surgeon which may include fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.
  • Performs interventions, skills, and procedures consistent with accepted standards of surgical practice, policies and procedures in the surgical suite.
  • Performs the technical procedures necessary for job responsibilities in a safe, effective, efficient, legal and professional manner.
  • Is responsible for own education, personal growth and development.
  • Takes timely action and appropriately plans for cases with consideration of individual needs.
  • Willing to assist in other roles to keep costs down and quality high.
  • According to facility policy, assists with and/or performs wound closure.
  • Understands and differentiates one type of suture from another, having knowledge of the physical characteristics and biological responses to various suture materials.
  • Selects appropriate suture and needles for the type of closure to be performed.
  • Is skillful at knot-tying techniques with consideration to knot security, suture selection, and tissue characteristics.
  • Acts as a resource to staff, patients and families regarding patient care.
  • Facilitates efficient, appropriate, coordinated care to help ensure positive patient outcomes.
  • Handles unanticipated events and crisis situations in a professional manner.
  • Is alert to potential problems and notifies appropriate individual as necessary.
  • All other duties as assigned.
