About The Position

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, Surgery, the RN First Assistant is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process. The RN First Assistant provides direct care perioperatively under the supervision of a surgeon as a first assistant during surgical procedures utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. The RNFA is responsible for managing the care of assigned patients and directing the activities of ancillary nursing staff. The RNFA interacts with patients and their families and collaborates with other health team providers to render quality care.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR card.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is preferred.
  • Five (5) years experience as a peri-operative RN, including at least five (5) years as a scrub or circulating nurse.
  • Successful completion of an approved AORN RNFA program including a supervised clinical component.
  • Bachelor's degree and current RNFA certification is preferred.
  • RN First Assistant applications must be approved by the Medical Staff office for allied health personnel.
  • Successful completion of an annual review performed by the surgeon sponsor to maintain privileges.
  • Annual employee performance review by designated Surgical Services Leadership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family, and health care personnel.
  • Ability to handle varying issues in a stress-producing environment and work effectively individually and as a team member.

Nice To Haves

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Bachelor's degree and current RNFA certification.
