This position demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and care appropriate to the ages of patients served. The RNFA functions as first and second assistant and is able to function as the primary scrub person during operative procedures. The role involves maintaining an aseptic and safe environment in the Operating Room and assisting in the intra-operative care of the patient by performing nursing and technical duties as assigned. This position services neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. The RNFA is expected to demonstrate a caring attitude and display compassionate behaviors in all interactions with patients and their families, working with diverse populations and integrating individual patient/family preferences into the plan of care. The role also includes providing appropriate emotional, physical, and spiritual support and comfort to patients, families, and coworkers, and delivering nursing care with respect to individual spiritual and cultural needs. A strong emphasis is placed on a culture of safety, requiring the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, utilizing principles of growth and development across the life span, assessing and interpreting patient data, and providing care as described in departmental policies and procedures. Key safety responsibilities include verifying the surgeon, identifying the patient and operative site, ensuring informed consent and History and Physical are complete, actively participating in Universal Protocol procedures for correct site surgery, assisting in maintaining accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments, assisting with patient positioning, sharing responsibility for patient safety, maintaining a hazard-free environment, delivering medication according to policy, identifying unsafe patient care practices, protecting patient information, and participating in efforts to reduce adverse employee or patient care events, while integrating The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals into nursing practice.
