About The Position

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse delivers fast paced, high acuity care to patients presenting with a wide range of emergent medical needs at Sentara . This per diem position offers flexible scheduling for day or night shifts . The ER RN must demonstrate rapid assessment abilities, strong critical thinking skills, and the ability to work effectively in urgent and unpredictable situations. A minimum of 2+ years of recent ER experience is required , and the candidate must be available to start immediately . Key Responsibilities Emergency Assessment & Treatment Triage and prioritize patients using established emergency severity protocols. Deliver evidence based nursing care to patients experiencing trauma, stroke, cardiac events, respiratory distress, psychiatric crises, and other emergent conditions. Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and lifesaving interventions per provider orders. Perform emergency procedures such as wound care, splinting, CPR, and basic airway management. Critical Response & Rapid Decision Making Respond quickly to codes, rapid response calls, and urgent changes in patient condition. Identify life threatening symptoms and initiate interventions without delay. Collaborate with physicians and medical teams during emergent procedures. Collaboration & Communication Work seamlessly with physicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other hospital staff. Provide calm, compassionate communication with patients and families during stressful events. Participate in hand offs, team huddles, and multidisciplinary planning. Documentation & Compliance Document all assessments, interventions, medications, and outcomes accurately in the EMR. Follow EMTALA regulations, HIPAA, hospital policies, and infection prevention standards. Ensure adherence to patient safety protocols and emergency department procedures.

Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state specific).
  • Minimum 2+ years recent ER experience in a hospital setting.
  • Current BLS , ACLS , and PALS certifications.
  • Strong emergency assessment, triage, and clinical judgment skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle high stress situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Level I or II trauma centers.
  • TNCC, ENPC, or CEN certifications.
  • Proficiency with emergency equipment including cardiac monitors, ventilators, and infusion pumps.
  • Strong communication, deescalation, and crisis management skills.
