About The Position

CVP seeks Registered Nurses to join our team in providing our Nation's Veterans with emergency care services at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center (LSCVAMC) in Cleveland, OH. ED RNs will deliver immediate, unscheduled nursing care across a 28-room Emergency Department (24 medical rooms and 4 psychiatric rooms) that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This role requires the ability to make rapid, informed clinical decisions across a wide spectrum of emergency presentations — from minor injuries to life-threatening events such as heart attacks, strokes, severe trauma, and acute psychiatric crises. ED RNs must thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment and demonstrate expert-level triage capability, procedural proficiency, and compassionate patient and family communication. Shifts are primarily 12 hours. Day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday availability is required.

Requirements

Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust government security clearance; U.S. Citizenship is required.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license from the Ohio Board of Nursing or a current multi-state license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
Minimum of two (2) years of direct patient care experience in an emergency department or acute care setting within the last three (3) years; emergency nursing experience is strongly preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent accredited certifying body.
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Current CPR certification from an American Heart Association vendor.
Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.

Nice To Haves

VA experience is preferred.
Certification as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) is preferred.
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification is preferred.
Experience with psychiatric emergency patient care is preferred.
Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) documentation; experience with VA VISTA/CPRS systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

Perform triage assessments to prioritize patients based on acuity and severity of condition upon arrival to the Emergency Department.
Obtain comprehensive patient histories and pertinent family histories; assess patients and plan appropriate nursing care.
Perform critical care nursing functions for patients requiring immediate intervention, including those with life-threatening cardiac, respiratory, neurological, or traumatic emergencies.
Perform scrub and circulating duties within the Emergency Department as required.
Administer medications, including IV therapies, and possess knowledge of actions, usual dosages, and locations of commonly used emergency drugs, including those on the crash cart.
Interpret cardiac rhythms and ECGs, recognizing arrhythmias and their clinical implications, and respond appropriately.
Operate defibrillators, EKG machines, cardiac monitors, and other emergency technical equipment.
Initiate life-saving measures in the absence of a physician and reorganize and initiate appropriate responses to emergencies.
Perform and maintain central line care and ventilator management in compliance with LSCVAMC policy.
Perform skin assessments and implement measures to prevent Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers (HAPU).
Verify transcription of physician orders; accept verbal orders only in compliance with facility policy.
Assess and document patient response to administered medications and treatments.
Reassess patient condition continuously and revise plan of care based on identified changes or nursing problems.
Monitor intake and output every shift and more frequently as clinically indicated.
Review all laboratory data and electronic medical records, communicating critical findings to the appropriate provider without delay.
Care for patients with a variety of catheters and prostheses.
Provide specialized care and monitoring for patients presenting with acute psychiatric emergencies in the four dedicated psychiatric emergency rooms.
Instruct patients and families regarding prescribed medications, therapies, and upcoming surgical or diagnostic procedures.
Assess patient and family knowledge levels, implement education plans, and document demonstrated understanding.
Participate in discharge planning as appropriate and ensure continuity of care through accurate and timely handoff communication.
Document all patient care accurately and completely in the EHR prior to the end of each shift, ensuring all medication orders from the previous shift have been appropriately noted and acted upon.
Maintain a neat, professional personal appearance and consistently apply VA customer service standards, demonstrating helpful, courteous, and respectful conduct at all times.
Respect patient rights, including visual and auditory privacy.
Participate in continuous quality improvement activities, Unit Practice Council (UPC) meetings, Nursing Quality Council, Professional Practice Council, unit staff meetings, safety huddles, and bedside reporting as required.
Report all patient safety incidents to the COR within 24 hours in accordance with VA patient safety policy.
Maintain compliance with all VA, Joint Commission, and facility-specific policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
